For 25 years (1985) Águeda received for the first time a demonstration of the Worlds Motocross championship, it was of the class 125 and Dutch Dave Strijbos was the best upon half-a-score of million of Portuguese spectators. Two years after the 250 passes through the racing track of Casarão, with the Belgium Eric Geboers aiming and winning the title of this class, joining it to the titles of 125 and 500 turning into the first Mr. of 875 (sum of the three classes) of the Motocross history. The year after, 1998, the 125 returned and Strijbos was once again the best, but this time commanding a Italian Cagiva. In 1990 the 125 continued, and the victory was for the American Donny Schmit.
The 500 class had it's only GP in Águeda in the year of 1994, at this time the 4 time Mottos started to dominate this class. It was also wath happened in Águeda with the Belgium Jacky Martens and its Husqvarna. In 1997 and in 1998 we assisted the dominion of Steven Everts and its Honda in the class of 250, at this time this class queen and Motocross started to have a great development.
The Italien Alessio Chiodi wined the 125 GP in 1999, contributing to his third consecutive title of this class. In 2000 the 250 class returned and Mickael Pichon successes with his Suzuki. After three years with out having the World Motocross Championship, Águeda returned to its calendar in 2004, marking part of a new epocch of Motocross were we have at the some GP competition the new classes MX1 and MX2. Pichon triumphed in MX1 and the Zealander Ben Townley in MX2. In 2005 and 2006 the Belgium Stefen Everts (Yamaha) and the South African Tyla Ratray (KTM) repeated their triumphs at the GP of Portugal. In 2007 the highest stair of the podium in MX1 was for the Belgium Kevin Strijbos, with Suzuki, and for the Italian António Cairoli, who conquered it's second world title in MX2.
In 2008, António Cairoli repeated his triumph of the year before, while the French Sebastian Pourcel preformed on the highest place og the podium with his Kawasaky. Águeda has already known 12 diferents winners, from which stands out Stefen Everts, with 4 successes, Michael Pichon, Tyla Ratray, António Cairoli and Dave Stijbos with two victories each. The story continues and on 9th of May 2010 we will have knowledge of other winners whom will write their name on the success palm of the Capital of Motocross. |
